“SkillsUSA: Our Time is Now”

SkillsUSA Wisconsin is heading back to Madison, WI, April 25th-26th, 2023, for the 50th annual State Leadership and Skills Conference (SLSC). SLSC is a showcase of career and technical education students and more than 2,000 individuals including students, teachers, and industry partners are expected to participate in the event.

Date: April 25th and April 26th, 2023

Location: Alliant Energy Center & Madison Area Technical College

Registration: The registration fee includes lunch on Wednesday, sessions, vendors, materials, and supplies. To register, go to the national registration website

  • Pay special attention to the contest updates found in the registration packet. For example, there are a few new contests and the State Pin Design Contest has changed.
  • The following contests occur at MATC Madison: Architectural Drafting, Automotive Refinishing Technology, Computer Programming, Collision Repair Technology, Electronics Technology, Information Technology Services, Precision Machining Technology, Technical Drafting, and Welding (High School).
  • The hands-on portion of the Culinary Arts contest will be held on April 14th at Waukesha County Technical College and requires a separate registration. This event is not free, but invoices will be associated with the later State Conference. Advisors of competitors will need to register their students for the Culinary Arts contest and the State Conference. The Culinary Arts written exam will take place at the State Conference. 
  • The contest matrix is an evolving document in that there are some contests that are pending. We wanted to provide you with the best, most current information we could at this time.
  • All contestants must turn in a copy of their resume at their contest briefing.

    • For the state competition, black tennis shoes will be accepted for leadership and occupational contests.

3D Printing & DesignContest guidelines will be emailed to the advisors of registered students from skillsusa.3dprinting@gmail.com.
Additive ManufacturingContest details will be released shortly to all advisors of registered students. Model files will be due 1-2 weeks before the contest date and then judged at SLSC. Students can bring their own printed files, but we will also offer to print them and bring them to SLSC. There will be a written test. Students are allowed to share a computer with their teammates.
Advertising DesignAn email was sent to advisors on 4/21. Remember to bring a laptop with design software, ideally Adobe Suite, but you may use others.
Architectural DraftingBe sure to reference the email sent to advisors on April 18th. Architectural software of choice. School-owned computers must be set up to operate the software of choice independent of the school’s network. Test the software off the school network before attending!
Automated Manufacturing TechnologyPart 1 will take place pre-conference. You will receive a package in the mail to prepare part 1.
Automotive Maintenance & Light RepairAdvisors of registered students have been emailed with login information for Shop Key to help you prepare for the Electronic Service Information contest station. An email with additional information was sent on 4/11.

BarberingA contest update has been emailed to advisors of registered students.
CabinetmakingAn informational packet has been emailed to advisors of registered students. Packages will be sent out by March 25th. Packages must be returned to the chair postmarked by April 21st.

Crime Scene InvestigationThis contest is on April 21st at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay.

EntrepreneurshipAn electronic copy of the business plan and resumes are due to the chairperson by April 21st. Then, you will turn in two hard copies, in a binder, during your contest briefing.
Industrial Motor ControlThis contest is on April 14th at Moraine Park Technical College.

Information Technology ServicesRemember your laptop with a camera, headphones, charger, and a modern internet browser. Be sure to review the content on the link that was sent to advisors of registered students on April 11th.
Job InterviewAdvisors of registered students were sent an email on April 19th with a link to review the rubric ahead of time. Bring six copies of your resume for this contest. Don’t forget a pen to fill out your job application.
MechatronicsThe hands-on portion of this contest will take place on April 19th at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. The written test will take place on April 26th.

Precision Machining TechnologyClick here for more information on the Precision Machining Technology contest. From the chairperson: “We are running the contest as last year. The CAM programming portion will be with either Esprit or Master-Cam. No substitutes and no student can bring their own laptop with other software.”

Screen Printing TechnologyStudents will print 5 two color shirts of a design picked by the judges.  Students will do all screen work at their individual school and then print on contest day.  No ink should be on the screen prior to the contest. 
Sheet MetalThe technical committee would like to emphasize the need for trammel points or a beam divider. Students will have to draw a 16″ arc. We will have some at the competition, but if you have your own that would be preferred. This will allow the students to use them to complete the layout the night before the competition.
TeamWorksAn email was sent to the advisors of registered students with the supply list and another email with the two-day build schedule.

Television (Video) ProductionThis contest is taking place virtually on April 14th.
